Nitrogen determination according to Kjeldahl

The Kjeldahl method for nitrogen determination was developed in 1883 by the Danish chemist Johann Kjeldahl.

The procedure determines nitrogen and proteins in organic material. With the Kjeldahl process, the boiling point of sulfuric acid of 337 degrees Celsius is increased with the aid of catalysts. About 380 degrees is the optimum digestion temperature for organic material in sulfuric acid. The protein content is determined by multiplying the analytically determined nitrogen content with factor 6.25, for wheat, and flour with factor 5.7. With the Kjeldahl process, the nitrogen content is determined in 4 stages.

Nitrogen determination according to Kjeldahl - Kjeldahl block digestion systems

Kjeldahl block digestion systems

behr "K" blocks with high-quality non-corrosive block casing made of stainless steel are optimally suited for nitrogen determination if the user is working with standards that allow for traditional block digestion systems, yet not infrared rapid digestion units.

Caution: For other acid digestions, such as for phosphate determination, it is absolutely necessary that the gases are first neutralized in a behrotest® extraction system (behrosog 3 or SIMVAC) before they enter the hood. The behrotest® micro digestion blocks make only use of 100 ml vessels, the macro series 500 ml vessels. 250 ml vessels are used for behrotest® standard digestion blocks.

All models (Inkjel), whether for power or temperature adjustment, have a uniform heating block size. Inkjel is the product for performing various types for digestion for your applications. With an Inkjel rack and the respective fume setup, various volumes can be digested.

Kjeldahl Neutralizer

The two-level behrosog process extraction system is a compact system for extracting and neutralizing aggressive acid vapors, especially from the Kjeldahl digestion for nitrogen determination. A pre-separator increases the safety level. Acid vapors are kept fully away from the environment.

For behr digestion units (K-block & Inkjel devices), extraction systems for acid vapors are a necessity. We differentiate between a simple water jet pump / SIMVAC and the behrosog 3 extraction system & neutralizer.

The behrosog 3 does not require a water connection but a power connection instead and can be used for all digestion blocks, the SIMVAC here can be used for max. 8 samples.

Steam distillation units

behr distillation units of the S series are the ideal supplement to the behr InKjel digestion systems. Depending on requirements, the user can choose between five steam distillation units. These are identical in the basic construction but differ in terms of operating comfort and degree of automation. The top model behr S 5 enables use with an external titration device.

The included Windows software lets the user transfer application-specific distillation parameters via the USB interface bidirectionally between one or more devices and a PC. A library with standard applications is already included on the CD.
