Water vapour is available virtually immediately, i.e. after a period of maximum 30 seconds. The maximum duration of the water vapour supply – and thus the duration of the distillation – is not specified by a storage vessel inside the unit, but is only dependent on the size of the external container used by the user.

International standards specify the distillation of a large liquid quantity within a short period both for the determination of the phenol index (DIN 38409-16 and ISO 6439) and also for ammonium nitrogen (DIN 38406-5). To comply with these provisions it is necessary to have efficient distillation equipment particularly when processing several samples simultaneously. The behrotest® WE 5 Five-in-a-line multiple steam generator provides the simultaneously rapid and gentle distillation of up to five samples. The discharge of steam into the samples guarantees a particularly uniform distillation and thus a high reproducibility of the recovery rates over the entire range.

Workstation for the separation of steam-volatile phenols

Steam-volatile phenols are separated by distillation from other water constituents. Up to 500 ml water sample can be deployed. In the distillate, the phenols are photometrically determined. Here all phenol compounds are recorded that form a colorant with 4-aminoantipyrine. The determination limit of this method lies at 10 µg/l related to phenol.

While blowing in the steam, the samples are heated by the heating block in order to avoid condensation in the reaction flasks.

The behrotest equipment WE 5 can also be used for determination with steam volatile acids.
